Flight Delay Claims

You are entitled to compensation if your flight departed from the UK, European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

 If the delay is 2 hours or more then the airline have to provide:

  1. Food and drink.
  2. Phone calls and emails.
  3. Accommodation if you’re delayed overnight – and journeys between the airport and the hotel.

The threshold for a compensation claim is 3 hours or more and you are entitled to:

  1. Food and drink.
  2. Phone calls and accommodation.
  3. Compensation if it is the airlines responsibility ie due to not enough bookings or there is a fault with the aircraft.

You won’t get compensation if it was delayed because of  bad weather or a strike.

If the flight is delayed for 5 hours or more:

You do not have to take the flight and it is of no consequence who is responsible.

Your entitlements in this case when not taking the flight are:

  1. A full refund.
  2. A full refund for other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking, eg an onward or return flight.
  3. If you’re part-way through your journey, a flight which will transport you back to the airport you departed from.
  4. Food and drink.
  5. Phone calls and emails.
  6. Overnight accommodation , as well as journeys between the airport and the hotel.

If you do take the flight you are entitled to claim up to £600 delay if the responsibility of the airline.


You have the legal right to:

  1. A full refund – including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights.
  2. Help with costs – if the cancellation delays you 2 or more hours.
  3. Compensation – if you’d be delayed 2 or more hours by the replacement flight offered.

You can legally be entitled to receive compensation if the delay is the airline’s responsibility if:

  1. The replacement flight delays your arrival by 2 or more hours.
  2. Your flight was cancelled at least 7 days before departure.
You can claim if your flight was cancelled between 7 and 14 days before departure.

Please note if the airline does not provide any of the costs please keep all receipts of your expenditure during this period.
